Nairobi, Kenya – October 1, 2025 Mawingu, East Africa’s largest internet service provider (ISP) dedicated to rural and peri-urban markets, has secured a $20 million strategic investment from Pembani Remgro Infrastructure Fund II (PRIF II), an African-focused infrastructure investment fund.

The funding marks a significant milestone in Mawingu’s growth strategy and will accelerate its mission to deliver inclusive and sustainable internet access across underserved communities on the continent. By 2028, the company aims to reach at least one million people through a combination of disciplined acquisitions of local ISPs and the rollout of digital infrastructure in areas that have historically lacked affordable connectivity.

“As a multi-country operator on the continent with dedicated presence in the rural and peri-urban markets, this latest funding announcement marks a significant milestone for Mawingu, moving closer to our goal of positively impacting one million people in Africa by 2028,” said Farouk Ramji, Chief Executive Officer of Mawingu.

Internet access in Sub-Saharan Africa remains uneven, with rural and peri-urban communities particularly underserved due to high deployment costs and geographic barriers. Fixed broadband penetration is estimated at just 12% of households, despite studies showing its significant impact on education, job creation, and economic growth. The World Bank has noted that a 10% increase in broadband penetration can raise GDP growth by 1.38% in developing countries.

Mawingu has adopted a “buy-and-build” strategy, acquiring and developing sustainable networks that can thrive in challenging markets. A key milestone in this strategy was Mawingu’s acquisition of Tanzanian ISP Habari in 2024. Since then, the company has obtained a national license, expanded coverage to nine regions, and added more than 3,000 home users.

PRIF II, which led the transaction, highlighted Mawingu’s disciplined growth and innovative approach as central to its investment decision.

“Mawingu’s track record of disciplined growth and innovation in underserved markets makes them an ideal partner for PRIF II. This investment reflects our confidence in their ability to scale sustainably across Africa, and we’re excited to support their mission of expanding meaningful connectivity where it’s needed most,” said Ridwaan Tayob of PRIF II.

With this new round of funding, Mawingu is poised to deepen its footprint in East Africa and beyond, helping bridge the continent’s digital divide and unlocking broader economic and social opportunities for millions.
