The Tanzanian government have detained human rights activist Boniface Mwangi and others who had travelled to Dar es Salaam to attend a hearing in the treason case against detained opposition leader Tundu Lissu.
Bonnie and other activists from Uganda had travelled on Monday to attend the first hearing of Lissu’s first court appearance on Monday.
While speaking with AFP on Tuesday, his wife told them she has not been able to contact him since his arrest.
“I have been told they are waiting for the government of Tanzania to consult and decide whether to charge him or to deport him,” she said.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said Monday that foreign activists would not be allowed to interfere in the country’s affairs and urged security organs “not to allow ill-mannered individuals from other countries to cross the line here”. She added.
Boniface Mwangi and a Ugandan lawyer, Agather Atuhaire, were arrested at Serena Hotel and were taken to the central police station in Dar es Salaam, his lawyer Jebra Kambole confirmed to AFP.
According to the Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC), Boniface Mwangi was arrested on allegations of giving false information to gain entry into the country. It was not clear on what basis Atuhaire had been detained.
